Polaris RANGER RZR XP 900 Wins Two Classes at Dakar!

Official Team Polaris/Xtreme Plus participated for the first time ever at the Dakar 2012, the world’s toughest off-road race. After having developed a special new FIA class (T3) for the RZR, the Polaris/Xtreme Plus Team had run some tests in several events, and won the Dakar Series, in Russia, in July 2011.

But Dakar is definitely another story, with more than 5,592 miles of racing, three countries crossed in South America, 469 participants, and various terrain and extreme weather conditions. ASO, the promoter, reported that the 2012 edition was the toughest event in many years.

Team Polaris/Xtreme Plus enrolled a very experienced driver Willy Alcaraz No. 374, who had participated in Dakar in several classes as a driver and co-driver, and set up one goal for the first event, reach Lima in Peru!

After two weeks of the race, Alcaraz proved the RZR XP is one of a kind, as the team reached the initial goal by crossing the finish line in Lima without any technical issues. But they also claimed the win in two different classes: T3 and solo. The No. 374 managed also to finish some of the longest and hardest stages in the top 30, finishing 42 overall in the car class. No doubt, this is a unique and an historical performance for Alcaraz, the Polaris RZR XP and Xtreme Plus Team!

“In Puerto Plata, at the start of the race, everybody was amazed to see me alone in my small car. Some of them were even laughing at me!,” said Alcaraz. “But days after days, they were less and less smiling when I was overtaking them in the dunes. Even if my top speed was inferior on some trails, the RZR XP was just incredible and fun to drive in the toughest technical section. I managed to stay always in the top 50. I had just to repair, change a couple of tires and PVT belt along the race. The vehicle was very well prepared by Xtreme Plus and the mechanic guys did a great job every night. This is an incredible result for Polaris, the team and myself!”

“We showed everybody the RZR XP is best lightweight buggy, with a dedicated class (T3) to race. It is very fun to drive and it has amazing capacities when the terrain is becoming technical,” Marco Piana, Polaris/Xtreme Plus Team Manager. “No doubt that a driver with a more expensive car and buggy will start looking at this affordable vehicle to race Bajas, Rallye Raid and Dakar.”

I dunno.
Glad I have the winch to pull you Wildcat buyers off the razor top when you high-center.
Your minds are made up.
Hard melons like coconuts.
No reaching ya.

I look in your eyes and someone is in there with ya riding shot-gun in a Arctic Cat.
A few more hours on the Kawai from hell might just clear your senses.

The Wildcat will high center just the same as the XP, they have the same 13" of ground clearance. So if you need to pull a Wildcat off a razor, we'll have to dig your XP out first.

And I haven't made me mine up yet, if I did, I would have one by now. I'm going to wait and see what happens before I buy, I just don't buy the first thing that come outs and upgrade two or three times because the company fixes the bugs and makes their first addition product better. I've done my impulse buying in the past, thats why I'm waiting to see what happens.

Good Take Malcolm.
In all seriousness, If they get the performance bugs worked out it'll no doubt be a great seller.

It's good for the market.
Raises the bar if for anything better styling and quality control.
Surprised they released it with this issue.
Our Dealer says they'll get one this week.
Even he admits its a dog power-wise.

One wonders if the Calif Wilcats are plugged up to pass CARB like the first Raptors?????

They have the XP 4 already,, really nice, not just a bigger motor but over all solid design.
They are already camoflaging the styling with accessories to make it showroom palatable.

I don't think even one time we took the Rzr S out we didn't have a serious issue of some sort where it didn't end up on the trailer mid-trip.

It's last trip the rear Axel's fell out of the Diff.
It was always something.

I sold it on Glamis Dune for what the Dealer said it would get.
Those with S's who were moving up to the XP that criticized me for the price,, I mean all of them selling theirs, eventually sold theirs for much less.

I think the Wildcat will sell on looks and suspension alone.
The XP sure ain't pretty.

It'll be real interesting to watch it's acceptance develop or back into hell like the Commander.
We too are holding onto our cash to watch the market pop before we buy again.

The XP is a great SXS as it is and once all the bugs are worked out of the Wildcat, it will be a tough choice to make on which one to buy.
The Wildcat rides (suspension) better than the XP, but the XP has better performance (engine). Looks, well that's in the eyes of the beholder, everyone has their own opinion to which one looks better.
As for now, I'm going to sit back for the 10 months or so and watch what happens in the market.
Just like everything else, someone will build a bigger better SXS next year. It all comes down to what fits my needs and what will hold up to the abuse of riding in the sand.

FYI - There's already an ad for aftermarket clutch upgrade for the Wildcat in an ATV mag I was reading the other day. :)

Already saw that, it's a wet clutch delete package. But they still need to work on the belt issue.
