MLK 2012 Weekend Report

The Gunz_ family rolls in around 9pm Thursday night and set up camp, no one around us. Around 10pm, I'm outside with most of my lights on finishing up, and someone pulls up within 100 yards of us and sets up camp. I'm like WTF? The entire area is open, but they camp within 100 yards of us, oh well. Guess you can't complain when it's an open area, and they we're quiet all weekend.

So we wake up Friday morning, a bit cold, but the sun was out and warming up quick. We take off for a ride and find nice smooth dunes everywhere, no one around, so we just cruise all over the place. We end up at the North Pole and no one there either. Very little wind so it made for a great time.

After a few cold ones, we head to Comp Hill and only a handful of people there. After a few more cold ones, it back to camp. The entire time riding, we had smooth dunes everywhere and only a couple a quads/bikes out in the dunes.

ORA rolls in Friday night and has a new hat. Moke had to try it out and just like ORA, he makes stupid look good.

Saturday morning was cold but again, the sun was up and warming things up nicely. Ross and family hadn't gotten up yet so we take off for a ride and find more smooth dunes and a few more people out there. Ross brought his other 450 so Little_Gunz_ got to ride a 450 the rest of the weekend. North Pole had a few people so like usual, we hang out and have a few cold ones.

So we hang out for a while wait for Ross and family. After they show up at the North Pole, it's off to Comp Hill. Comp Hill was busy and everyone got to run the hill. Ross raced his RZR XP up the hill, he won every race against other RZR XPs. James ran the hill on his Rator 250 with no problems.

The wind picked up Saturday night and into Sunday. We take off for a ride on Sunday morning and find the wind did a nice reset on the dunes. Islandgirl rode around with Ross in the XP so ORA took the lead and took us for a nice long run to the North Pole. The wind wasn't too bad, but enough to sand blast you if you rode the tops of the dunes. We got in a nice run to the North Pole, Comp Hill and back to camp.

After lunch, we take off again. This time Islandgirl and I take Ross' XP out with James, ORA and Little_Gunz_. Out to the North Pole we go and find more smooth dunes. The XP handled everything like a champ. After the North Pole, we took off to Comp Hill. This time we park near the top of Comp Hill so we could have a nice view of Dumont.

So the weekend was awesome. We basically had the dunes to ourselves, the wind picked up just enough to reset the dunes, and the weather was great.

Thanks to Ross for letting Little_Gunz_ use the 450 and for letting Islandgirl and I use the XP.

So now it's time to figure out when the next trip will be.

That's sweet! What GPS, App, phone did you use?

Garmin GPSMAPS 76C. I've had the GPS for years. Used to use it when I went to Glamis all the time to find places.
Garmin Mapsource software.
Exported tracks to .mps file.
Imported .mps file to Google Earth.
Changed each track color.
Pulled screen shots and posted from my hosting co.
