Guess how much I'm gonna spend fixing my tranny in the rail and you might win a prize. It's in the shop now. I already got the list of what's wrong with it and a rough guess on parts co$t. Seems I'm transmission plagued.

At least I fixed the fuel starvation problem I was having last April. (bad fuel pump)

The tranny is a Fortin 5 speed.

Now I wish Ace is right. I have an idea but not exact. Here is some more info: $600 just to open it up. Needs a Second gear, 2 sliders, 4 bearings. Bearings can be $100 each, sliders can be $200 each. Second gear don't know yet for sure but about $500 may be a good guess. Some seals ?? on price. I do know that the seals for the axle flanges are about $150 each but he says they look good but I told him they ooze a little by the case side. He seems to think he can fix that. My guess is about $1800 not including the Glamisdunes.com discount, whatever that is but I'll take it. Now of course it doesn't use regular gear lube, so add about $70 for that.

Here's the good news, I'm glad I took it in. I don't know the trannys history or what race team may have put it through a few Baja 1000's but when I get it back, she is gonna be one tough bitch made for more HP than I'm putting out. I guess that trans is strong. I also found out I'm not shifting it correctly, since it does NOT have syncros, I'm supposed to be more aggressive with my shifts and not use the clutch. Just let off the gas a little and grab gears. It has shift dogs kinda like dirt bike trannys.

I was reading up on an OffRoad fourm about that tranny. Just like the Big Rigs, shift with no clutch. I Likey!!!

I was reading on the Albins tranny site about the differences in syncro and dog ring trannys. Dog rings don't like smooth clutch shifts, actually makes them wear faster. I tried it a few times last trip and it does work but thought I would hurt something. I won't worry anymore.

I say it will be a lot more than Niel wants to spend, but for his sake I hope it is less than that.

Does that mean I'm not supposed to use the clutch on the quad? The R1?
If it was me it would be more to fix it, you, $2250. Never as cheap as the first guess.

Yes, give it a try. I'm sure we've all done it on quads and dirtbikes. Acellerate, let off a little while shifting, then roll on the gas. I always thought it was bad. Seems it's not.

And your probably right. When you ask for the Dana discount, they add 20% :)

ORA does it all the time, only uses the clutch to get started. I've done it, but not on a regular basis.

Yup. Speed-Shifting keeps me competative! :goofy:haha

As long as you blip the throttle and change gears, you should be fine.
I use the clutch during 1st to 2nd or 2nd to 1st and when I am just cruising. If I am on the gas then I will speed-shift.

FE135

It just doesn't feel natural in the car. I'm so used to using a clutch.

Ace, when you say "speed shifting", are you letting off the gas a little while shifting or just brute forcing it into the next gear?

I get off the gas during shifts. Just enough to cause a blip in the throttle.
Not brute force.

It is similar to World Super Bikes, but they program the comupter to blip the throttle during shifts so the rider does not have to get off the gas manually.

Are claming you are 'supposed' to use brute force? Not sure I would trust that unless there was a computer involved that you could program to do the off-throttle action for you.

FE135
07-27-2010, 12:53 PM
No, not claiming that you should use brute force. I was looking for clarification on how you do it. Here is what Albins says ( Fortin site is under constuction but same system):

What NOT to do.
The most destructive method of shifting gears is to attempt to change gear in a
`passenger car / synchromesh` way. This involves slow shifting and use of the
clutch, i.e. lifting off the throttle, depressing the clutch, moving the gear
lever slowly, releasing the clutch and applying the throttle.

While I have the tranny out I took the clutch to Kennedy for checkout. They said it's got lots of life left. It's a 4 puck racing clutch and is too grabby. I told them it's a pain to start off or load on trailer. They laughed and said it's supposed to be that way. I wound up getting a 6 puck. Seems I'll be happier and still have good grip. They said 4 puck for racing only.

Also, my center hub is not VW style. It's Chevy. They said it's a stronger upgrade in higher end trannys. They had stacks of them in stock. Same 200mm clutch except for the hub.

A lotta learning going on.

Have you tried Double Clutching it?

Have you tried Double Clutching it?

They say don't do that. Besides, defeats the purpose of fast shifting. Now on my 1950 Ford truck, that's the only way to shift it.

Got her installed, test drive good. Took my neighbor for a ride. He was surprised how fast it goes. Heck, never used full throttle, every time the boost came on the tires just spun. Few more minor stuff to do and I'm ready for dune season.
